How to Draw Torn Wallpaper in a Room

To create a modern, textured look, torn wallpaper can be hung in rooms. However, this technique can cause problems such as ripped seams and trapped air bubbles. These issues can be easily fixed with some specialized tools and techniques.

One way to make art stand out against busy wallpaper is to choose artwork that has negative space or a large scale subject. This helps to give your eyes a visual break from the pattern.

Measure Your Walls

You’ll need to know the dimensions of your walls in order to accurately design your wallpaper mural. Grab a tape measure and head to the wall you want to adorn. Start by measuring the height of the wall from the floor to the ceiling, making sure to take into account any baseboards or crown moldings. Write down this measurement on a piece of scrap paper. Next, measure the width of the wall from edge to edge and record it on your paper as well. When you’re done, add these two measurements together to find the total square footage of your wall.

Cut the Paper

Before you start applying the paper, use a utility knife to cut off the excess at the top and bottom of the strip. You may also want to cut a few extra utility blades (because wallpaper dulls them so quickly!) to ensure you have enough to get the job done.

The next step is to mark where you will cut your first length of wallpaper on the wall/ceiling with a pencil and a level. This is important to make sure you have a straight line of paper applied.

When you have your mark, measure to your cutting/pasting table and cut the paper to the appropriate length at the bottom (wall length + 4”). Make sure it matches the pattern of the strip that is already on the wall!

Before you apply the next strip, it is a good idea to turn off the electricity and put pieces of tape over any outlets to protect them. This will help prevent any accidental electrocutions or ruined outlets!

Apply the Glue

The success of your wallpaper installation depends on how well you apply the glue. The first step is to choose the right type of adhesive, which will either be water-based or solvent-based. It is important to follow the instructions on the label for application and drying times.

It is also necessary to turn off the electricity and remove any wall plates before starting. This will prevent you from electrocuting yourself or ruining the electrical outlets. For more info, do visit this website wallpaper singapore.

Next, you will need to prepare the wallpaper for gluing by brushing it with the paste. Use a soft artist’s paintbrush for best results, but if you have a large enough area, you can try a roller as well. Once the paper is properly prepared, it is ready to be hung. Professional decorators like to hang their lining paper horizontally, rather than vertically. This is called crosslining, and it helps to hide the seams between the lining paper and the wallpaper.

Apply the Wallpaper

You can hang wallpaper vertically or horizontally – whichever is best for the pattern and the room. If you’re hanging over lining paper it’s usually better to do so vertically to minimize the appearance of ridges at seams.

To start the process, move furniture and anything that can’t be removed away from the walls and cover flooring or items you don’t want to get covered in dust sheets. It’s a good idea to tape over wall plates and switches too (just enough to protect them).

To apply the wallpaper, pick up a concertina of your first strip. Position it on the wall, with a two-inch overlap at the ceiling and one at the corner. Use a level to check it’s straight and use a wallpaper smoother to smooth out air bubbles and wrinkles. If it looks okay, proceed to the next piece. Note: If your walls are crooked, mark a plumb line with your level to guide you.
